What is Citizen Science?

Citizen science is a method of engaging citizens young and old in systematic field data collection that is then recorded, analyzed, shared, and used by organizations and institutions, policymakers and regulators.

Audubon has a long tradition of participating in citizen science, and the Christmas Bird Count, started in 1900, is the longest continuous running citizen science program nationwide!

Tahoma Audubon is continuing our citizen science projects in 2010, by engaging programs, field trips, fundraisers, and adult and youth educational classes in citizen science through several citizen science programs, including:

eBird

Project FeederWatch

Puget Sound Seabird Survey

NatureMapping

Project Purple Martin

Nisqually BioBlitz - May15-16,2009

Great Backyard Bird Count

Christmas Bird Count

International Migratory Bird Day spring count

Finally, we have the daunting task of compiling and analyzing 41 years of records on birds species in Pierce County!  When this is done, we will be able to better know what is happening to local birds, and create a plan of action to protect local birds and their habitats.  Stay tuned!
